About us:

Hold Fast edge co. Is a Sebastopol, ca-based knife-and-tool sharpening service that specializes in the restoration, fabrication, and preservation of edged cutlery. I believe that old tools can and should be revitalized rather than thrown away - a mission I would love for you to join me on!

This tradition of carefully honing blades is as old as edged tools themselves. Flint and Obsidian edges would be re-flaked; bronze instruments of agriculture and war would be re-ground and Ultimately re-cast in bluestone molds; the legends of broken swords being reforged are rooted in factual practices from times in history when iron and steel were incredibly valuable.

I seek to continue this tradition of rehabilitation over obsolescence by hand-sharpening each knife with a state-of-the-art guided whetstone sharpening system. This method combines ancient heritage with modern precision to give each edge an accurate and yet personal finish.

HOLD FAST EDGE CO. is a family owned local business committed to quality work and the world we all live in. Fifteen percent of all profits are donated to humanitarian and environmental causes across the globe.

OUR JOURNeY:

My journey with knives (and exploration into the art of sharpness) began quite early: this was the first knife I ever made. Spruce branch, bungee cord, and sheet-metal-flashing. I used it to carve stick figures into the plastic recycling bin. Good times.

Years later, ON a 2018 trip through France, Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, I stumbled upon this mobile knife-sharpening setup in Seville. The sheer aura of this little bike had a lasting impression on me, prompting a journey into THE ART OF both metal work and motorcycles.

LATER THAT YEAR I STUDIED BOATBUILDING AND CRAFTSMANSHIP UNDER BOB DARR, A BOATBUILDER AND SCHOLAR (AND ALL AROUND RENAISSANCE MAN) FROM SAUSALITO, CA, WHO TaUGHT ME  AN APPRECIATION for sharp tools and artisanal values while laying a groundwork of mechanical skills.

I WAS ABLE TO FURTHER MY SKILLS BY DOING apprenticeship AND COMMISSION WORK WITH THE FINE FOLKS AT savage SublimeThey Produce fantastic
products and taught me the value of a good customer experience.

On January 23, 2021, I bought my beloved 1972 Honda Xl250 dual-sport motorcycle, known affectionately (but perhaps inexplicably) as 'the middle one.' After an extensive restoration, the bike was ultimately fitted with a knife sharpening system on the cargo rack, forming the functional flagship for Hold Fast Edge co.
